Dear World

Today I bequeath to you one little girl in a crisp dress, two twinkling eyes and a happy laugh that ripples all day long and a flash of curly hair that bounces in the sun when she runs. I trust you will treat her well. She's slipping out the backyard of my heart this morning and skipping off down the street to her first day of school and never again will she be completely mine. No longer will she have time to sit on the front porch steps on a summer day and watch an ant scurry across the crack in the side walk. Nor will she have time to pop out of bed with the dawn and kiss the lilac blooms in the morning dew. The books and learning will replace the blocks and dolls.  She'll find new heroes. For 5 full years I've been her sage and Santa Claus and pal and playmate and father and friend...But today I'll stand and watch her start out on that long, lonely journey to becoming a woman.
So world, I bequeath to you today...

I trust you'll treat her well. by Dan Valentine
Love, Papa

  1. I knew I should have waited to read this 'til later (as I wipe away the tears).....beautifully written. She'll have so many wonderful kindergarten tales to call and tell you about....we just have to get her Momma through the week.:0)

  2. Where did the time go? I came home to a house of all boys... I miss my little girl.

  3. She started today?!? I thought she started AFTER Labor Day! I'm not ready for that!

  4. That was beautifully written, I don't know what to say. What can I can I say, my baby princess is off into the world. Jaime told her that she hopes Rori meets a good Christian girl. Then Rori says or a good Christian boy. Please little girl one thing at time. Are you trying to give Papa a heart attack?--Papa
